Tuition culture in Nagpur

Updated: Jan 28, 2023

Gone are the days when students sat down after their school or college classes at home making notes of what they had studied earlier in the day. The process of organising thoughts, concepts and one's understanding through notes, charts, tables, using coloured pens to underline important text etc. has been thrown out of the window.

Silver Platter

Today students do not have time for such petty things that may help develop their cognitive abilities by the ‘do it yourself’ approach. Today everything is spoon fed. Every important detail, notes, and questions are served on a platter to the students. Students do not go home from their school or college classes to do self study. They reach home only to get ready for their tuition classes.

A Tuition Hub

Nagpur has become a hub for high end tuition classes. With the arrival of Allen institute, the tuition class craze in Nagpur has reached a new high. With modern classrooms with air conditioning, projectors and newly printed notes, these tuition classes are attractive to both students and their parents. Students want to study in tuition classes as they promise personal attention towards every student. Parents want their child to excel at studies and they believe tuition classes are the solution for it.

A situation has come where both the parents and the student trust the classes more than their school or college teachers. They even bunk their lectures to attend the tuition instead. One of the biggest driving factors for this is that the tuition classes focus mainly on content which will help the student attain higher marks in their exam.

To accommodate this, all the possible questions and answer sets are provided to the student so that they can memorise everything.

This trend of memorising is concerning as it takes away the ability of a student to understand the concepts. Yes, memorising formulas, historical dates etc is important, but if students do not know how to apply them practically then memorising them is moot.

Not all tuition is bad though. Some local tuitions do focus on developing a students understanding of the concept rather than just spoon feeding them. Tuitions are also a great way to revise what you have studied in your school or college classes. That is exactly how tuition came into being. In order to compel students to revise, parents hired a personal teacher who would help them do so. However, the tuition we see today is just a factory churning out students who can memorise and score well in exams. Very few of these students are leaders, innovators or researchers. Students with such qualities are rarely found in tuition classes. They are mostly found in college or school classrooms being curious and getting their hands dirty by trying everything on their own with some guidance from their teachers. That is what schools and colleges are. They are maps that equip us with all the necessary information we need to navigate through life. It is up to an individual to use this information in their own unique way and carve their path.

Only time will tell if this tuition culture, which pushes memorising more than understanding the concepts, prevails or the school and colleges retain their lost glory by reforming themselves into institutions of curiosity.
