The RIGHT to Vote | But How to vote the RIGHT way?

Updated: 9 hours ago

India, known as the biggest democracy in the world, gives its citizens the right to Suffrage i.e. the right to vote. An unlikely democracy, where unity in diversity has upheld the secular and sovereign nature of the country, the fundamental right to vote is exercised with great enthusiasm, almost as if it were a festival.

It gives the opportunity to the people of India, to exercise the power to choose their representative who would give them a voice in the Lok Sabha and the Vidhan Sabha, and will work on the improvement of basic infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, etc. to make the living standard of the citizen better.

This ideal scenario is only possible if voting is done the RIGHT way. In India, a vote is cast based on popular sentiment. People vote for either the leader of a particular political party, who presents often improbable dreams to the voter, or they vote for their favored political party. It happens because the voter is overloaded with unnecessary information, which acts as a noise and distracts the voter from choosing the most ideal candidate to vote for in their constituency.

The voter must realize that the development of their area or constituency is the sole responsibility of the candidate, who wins the election from THEIR constituency.

The government in power only acts as an enabler to this candidate and provides the necessary tools, such as access to money and other state-run machinery to carry out development, beautification, and provide education, healthcare, sanitation, food, water, safety, and other basic facilities to the citizens of that constituency.

However, by voting for the face of the party or a political party in general, the power to vote is no longer powerful. The candidate who may have the potential to actually bring change in your area/constituency, irrespective of the political party he/she belongs to, may lose the elections, because the voter, chooses to vote for symbolism and populism, rather than actual work.

How to Choose a Capable Candidate in your constituency?

Choosing the most ideal candidate who will represent you and your constituency is of the utmost importance. The ideal candidate can be chosen based on the history of their work in the upliftment of the constituency. A representative who has worked tirelessly to keep the social fabric of the area intact, such as maintaining communal harmony, the safety of women and children, and cleanliness among other things, can be considered a suitable candidate.

All this information can easily be obtained by visiting the Election Commission website or following the link below.

To check the candidates running for the election in your constituency, follow the steps below

1. Choose the Election month, Election type, state, and your city/constituency and click on filter.

The election type can be a General election or a Bye-Election. General Election is held to constitute the Lok Sabha, electing members of parliament for all 543 parliamentary constituencies of India. Bye-Elections (also known as bypolls) are used to fill elected offices that have become vacant between general elections.

It can also be for the Parliamentary Constituency (PC), where the vote is given to choose a Member of Parliament for Lok Sabha, or the Assembly Constituency (AC) where the vote is given to elect the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Vidhan Sabha. In the case of Nagpur, the city of Nagpur is the parliamentary constituency and the different zones of Nagpur such as Nagpur South, Nagpur West etc. are assembly constituencies as shown below.

Voting for the candidate of the constituency, on merit, based on their work on the upliftment and development of your area, irrespective of their party or ideology would ensure that the candidate would be the true representative of the people, upholding the democracy as ‘of the people, by the people and for the people’.
