Manholes are everywhere in Nagpur. A manhole is an opening to access public utilities such as sewage pipes or internet lines for inspection and maintenance. These manholes are covered with a heavy iron cover so that it cannot be accessed by the public. However, when these manholes are made, they are supposed to be in level with the surface on which they are made. However, with rapid construction of roads across Nagpur and constant patchwork done every year, Nagpur is facing a manhole situation which may prove fatal for drivers on Nagpur roads.
Careless Safety
Protruding manholes are the biggest threat. They look like a pimple on the road which keeps growing every year. The iron cover of the manhole, which is either rectangular or circular in shape, can easily cause a two wheeler to flip if it is hit. It would have been less dangerous if these manholes were on the side of the street or some place where there is not a constant flow of vehicles.
But many such manholes are right at the middle of the road, which on a heavy traffic day are not visible unless a driver gets too close to it, or worse, rams into it.
Although such protruding manholes are less dangerous if placed at a position where a vehicle would not hit it, most of these manholes are placed next to an immediate left turn, which if collided with, can be the last left turn of a two wheeler driver.
Why such manholes exist is a question that only the group that made it can answer. Common sense may indicate complacency and a rush to finish the work as obvious reasons. However, no common sense can reason with the fact that such shabby work is a danger to anyone driving on Nagpur roads, a fact that needs to be dealt with for the sake of every Nagpurkar.
