Red Light, Green Light - Traffic Rules and Nagpur's struggle to follow them

Updated: Jan 22, 2023

Driving without a valid licence, Driving a two wheeler more than one pillion rider, Violating traffic light signal using the wrong side, cutting lanes, not stopping at the stop line, using pressure horn are some of the basic traffic violations that one should avoid.

Effort to Curb Violations

The Nagpur Police have time and again released various circulars highlighting the consequences of traffic violations. They have gone as far as creating a song called “Signal na Tod” which plays every few minutes at traffic signals of Law college and other places to warn commuters of the dangers of breaking a signal. All this shows a genuine effort to decrease traffic fatalities and maintain the rule of law by the Nagpur police.

The Irresponsible Nagpurian

However, for some Nagpurians, traffic signals seem to be non-existent. Traffic violations are so blatant in Nagpur it is almost shocking to see. Starting with the Zebra crossing, it is only for crossing the road on foot, it is not for the vehicles to stop and wait for the signal to turn green. The stop line before the zebra crossing acts as a laxman rekha for drivers. It must not be crossed unless the traffic light is green. Yet almost always the vehicles are stopped over zebra crossings, making the pedestrian navigate between the vehicles like a maze. Then there are the traffic lights, green indicates GO, yellow Indicates wait and red indicates STOP. The commuters seem to turn colour blind when they come across a signal though. Red, yellow or green, the traffic lights are violated no matter what. In a city where almost every destination is no more than 30 minutes away, such impatience is a mystery which cannot be solved.

The pedestrians share the blame for traffic violations. Each traffic signal indicates when it can be crossed on foot and when it must not be crossed. These signals are always ignored by pedestrians putting themselves at risk of meeting with an accident.

Willingness to change from the citizens, and strict fines for traffic violations are necessary to overcome this situation of everyday mockery of traffic rules and regulations. As the Nagpur police are slowly using digital means to penalise violators, and no one is hidden from the eyes of the traffic cameras, there is a hope that people will fall in line and make Nagpur roads safe.
