Nagpur : As the winter session at the Vidhan Sabha begins, it also brings with it the toxic VIP culture in Nagpur. Elected representatives of the state, elected by the people, now force them to wait on signals, while their convoy passes unhindered. All this at the discomfort of the public, for whose comfort, prosperity, and safety they were elected.
VIP Culture
This year is no different, where an End to VIP culture has been promoted by all the political parties, the implementation of it seems nothing but a “Jumla”.
The arrival of a minister is easy to notice, especially during a parliamentary session in the city. Roads leading to the Vidhan Bhavan are inaccessible to the common public, traffic is diverted without giving much thought to its management leading to traffic jams and traffic is often brought to a halt by the traffic police, for the minsters convoy to pass.
The Common Man Waits
The common man, waiting for the traffic signal to open, appears like a caged animal in a zoo, while the minister, with their fleet, passes by, glancing in a matter-of-fact way. That glance seems to indicate to everyone waiting on the traffic signal that this is normalcy, where the elected representative will promise development and beg for power before the elections, and later would dominate using the same power so that the people who elected them are powerless and left to beg for a decent way of life.
The basic safety precautions of the ministers are understandable. With a history of attacks on the parliament, safety measures must be implemented. People are more than willing to compromise on some discomfort in their daily routine for their elected representatives. However, mistaking this compromise for acceptance and putting a halt to life for the convenience of a few is a mistake that needs to be rectified for citizen-friendly governance.
