Public Display of Affection

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Nowadays, most famous gardens around Nagpur are no more suited to family outings or school picnics. Once a place for people to relax, have cute picnics and garner memories have now become a destination for young couples to kiss behind a bush, tree or any empty spot they can find for themselves. This can be seen in the Ambazari Garden, the Japanese Garden and the now closed Botanical garden had the same sightings.

Showing affection is frowned upon in our society. Holding hands, kissing, flirting are some acts to summon the self-proclaimed morality police.

Morality Police

They abuse the couples both physically, verbally and in the process mentally, as if they have committed an unpardonable heinous crime. The result is these couples resorting to public displays of affection where they can find some quiet without any disturbance and the garden is one such place.

Uncomfortable Affection

However, the increasing number of couples arriving at the garden at the same time has also taken away the charm of these places. Every corner you watch, a couple can be seen which makes a family with children uncomfortable.

The couples do have the option of renting a hotel room but not everyone can afford it.

In such circumstances, where there is a stigma of sometimes a man and a woman even being a couple, how does one connect with their partner without showing affection is a question that has no easy answers. Young blood is rebellious and they go to any length to express themselves, especially if it is with someone special.

Will accepting a public display of affection reduce the awkwardness that comes with such encounters with couples? It may, but an increasing number of couples in public places showing PDA can be considered as a nuisance as well. However, acceptance may surely make it easier to coexist in harmony without ruining one's day due to awkward encounters.
