A young and fast growing city, in terms of infrastructure and jobs, Nagpur is slowly becoming a favourite for startups and young talent to start their career. Easy access to everything makes it a perfect place to live and grow.
However, an issue still plagues Nagpur that may keep it from being the absolute best for some years to come. That issue is of the salary given to employees in Nagpur as compared to other cities.
Cheap Labour?
While negotiating salaries, a Nagpur employer always stresses on the fact that Nagpur is a cheap city compared to other first and second tier cities around India. It is also argued that travel across Nagpur is cheaper and hence the salary offered in Nagpur is normally 20%-25% lesser than cities such as Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.
Cost Of Living
Although it is true that Nagpur is much smaller than the metropolitans and that expenses such as rent and food is relatively lower, petrol prices are relatively higher than most cities. Also, as Nagpur most online orders come from the metropolitans, buying a product online from Nagpur is also more expensive. Finally, even though renting a room is relatively cheaper, the property rates across Nagpur are soaring, especially after Covid. A room or apartment for rent is difficult to come by which is causing even more increase in rent.
An argument from the employee's perspective is that why does a city matter at all? A person's salary is decided based on skills and work ethic. If a person working from home is delivering high quality work with better results, that person ought to be paid more than anyone else doing an inferior job, irrespective of the city or state.
